This is a 6 - week group for children 6 - 10 that have experienced a traumatic event.
Puppets serve as animated symbols and intermediary objects. Thoughts and feelings can be projected onto the puppets and are worked through, allowing for the dramatic release and resolution of emotional conflicts.
The use of puppets in therapy allows children to reflect on new strategies to face challenges and build new experiences. This process will aim to support the child in enriching their range of responses to deal with the complexities of their lives.
Another benefit for using puppetry with children in this forum is to help stimulate memory while providing a safe opportunity for creative and imaginative expression of past traumatic experiences.
Other goals for are to:
foster language development
Offer the opportunity for children to explore roles and to express and explore uncomfortable feelings, aggression, and relationship conflicts.
Limit anxiety, fear, and guilt.
Participants that would be a good fit for this group would be children that have witnessed or experienced any of the following:
Physical or verbal violence between parents or guardians.
Sudden death of a loved one.
Having difficulty processing thoughts about their personal health.
victim/survivor of sexual abuse.
Children in this group will CREATE and make their OWN puppet over the six week period while working together through their anxieties and fears.
The group will end with members recreating their story by developing a short 'puppet show'.
